“When a diamond loses its sparkle, you don’t throw it away----you shine it, maybe get it a new setting, and then proudly wear it again.”
That’s the visionary thinking that spurred Mary “One” Johnson, president and chief executive of Mary One Johnson Home Team Realty, LLC. To set about changing the face of the city of St. Louis’ real estate market.
“I was born in the city, and have lived in many of the communities that we developed. I see it as a diamond, because I know what it has been and what it can become. I see home ownership as a blessing,” Johnson says.
“We’re not building and selling homes, we’re building and selling communities where people want to live. It’s thrilling to go back and get to help rebuild some of the areas where I grew up.”
When Johnson, who received her real estate license in 1992, isn’t developing her community, she’s volunteering in it. Mayor Francis G. Slay appointed her to the St. Louis Preservation Board and she’s active in the St. Louis Association of Real Estate Professionals and the National Association of Home Builders.
From 2002-2006, the company was recognized as one of the top 25 African-American businesses in the St. Louis area by the Regional Commerce and Growth Association, The St. Louis American and the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis. Johnson also received an Outstanding Accomplishment award from the St. Louis Association of Real Estate Professionals. In 2003, Johnson was awarded the Outstanding Service Award from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for rebuilding communities and increasing home ownership opportunities; and in 2004, received the developer of the year award from St. Louis city.
“We are making a difference sale by sale, development by development, and community by community, through God’s blessings,” Johnson says. |
